WELLBEING

Going into hospital for a major surgery is confronting for most people.  There are many important decisions to make, many new things happening around you and a lot of what will happen during your stay in hospital is out of your control. This all adds to the stress and anxiety of a procedure that will be a big change in your life.   To recover quickly and heal well, it is just as important to look after your mental health, as it is to look after your physical health.  Taking a few minutes out of each day just for yourself is important. Surround yourself with positive people who love you and a few of your favourite things to comfort you while you are preparing for, and recovering from, surgery.

The following pages contain some advice for how you can best manage and cope with your experiences leading up to, during and following your stay in hospital.   To help you minimise your stress and anxiety we have provided information about relaxation techniques, alternative pain management techniques and some simple things you can do to empower yourself to help make the next few months a little easier on you while you recover.  We hope you find these suggestions helpful.
